Igei Beach is a popular kite spot suitable for winds from the south. The sand on the beach is softer than most other spots in Okinawa and it is popular with non-kiters. This is also a good location if you are with people who are not kiting. There is a rocky pier suitable for watching the scene. Wind direction: ESE to SW Tides: Any
Getting There
Igei kite beach is halfway up the east side of the island off highway 329. There is a parking for about 15 cars in the main area (west side of the beach). There are restrooms and fresh water available for cleaning off gear. Next to the parking, there is a large grassy area that can be used for drying gear if grass is not too long.
Then through a gate you have access to the beach, which is about 1 km long and has a paved trail alongside and several access points. On the opposite, east-side end of the Igei beach, there are a few more parking spots and another restroom. Some kiters will launch there but it tends to be less popular and requires higher tides.
Kiting Conditions
Launch conditions: Easy. The beach is soft sand although sometimes vegetation can grow. There are a couple of ropes if the wind is side shore or side on shore.
The main launch area has a cove bracketed by two concrete jetties. If the wind is directly on-shore and you are underpowered, it can be challenging to get outside the jetties. While the sand on the beach is soft, there are a few areas of coral once you get in the water. Exact Kite Launch Location:
Local Hazards
Concrete jetties The large concrete jetties that make it easy to spectate can sometimes make it difficult to get away from the beach, especially if the wind is directly on-shore or you are underpowered.
Other beach users
There are a lot more beach users at this spot that other kiting locations in Okinawa, so be considerate of other people walking, lounging, winging, SUPing, and swimming. There is a boat launch right next door where there can be a lot of jet ski activity.
