KITEBOARDING MIYUKI BEACH

ONNA, OKINAWA

Miyuki is an amazing beach to kite. The sand is soft and there is a colorful coral reef over which to kite. There can also be great waves with swell from the northwest.

Access

There is a parking area on the opposite side of highway 58. Unfortunately, this road can be quite busy and there are a lot of distracted tourists, so care must be taken when crossing. Once you cross the road there are steps leading down to the beach.

Exact Kite Launch Location:
Wind direction: WNW to NE
Tides: 0.9m+ (0.7m+ if care taken to avoid shallow spots)
Launch conditions: Intermediate. Miyuki Beach is relatively narrow, especially at higher tides. There is a river estuary with some open sand. This is the easiest place to launch if there is someone to launch you. Further north along the narrow part of the beach, it may be possible to anchor from a tree if the wind direction is suitable.

Hazards

Rip Currents
When the waves are breaking, there can be two strong rip currents. Each is visible in a google map image. The first one is directly in front of the river estuary. The second one is about 1 km further north. Rip currents can be hazardous to kiting because if the kite crashes in the wrong place, the rip current can carry it upwind and make water relaunch impossible. You will have to release the kite, and the try to swim yourself away from the rip current and back to shore. If you must kite across a rip current, it is best to avoid turn or jumping near it.
Rocks
There are some large rock outcroppings about 500m down the beach but these are easy to see and avoid and you don't generally have to worry about any other submerged rocks.

Other beach users

Miyuki beach is usually quiet and you will have the beach to yourself. Occasionally, there are walkers or paddleboarders. Sometimes surfers use the break at Miyuki just off the point. Please give them wide berth and share the ocean.
